Manitoba wildfire risk subsides
Residents of two Manitoba communities southeast of Winnipeg can go back to their homes, after they were forced out earlier in the weekend due to a wildfire in the area.
A fire evacuation order was lifted on Sunday for Woodridge, a village about 90 kilometres from the Manitoba capital.
Woodridge residents who were moved from the area earlier this weekend may go back to their homes,sacs louis vuitton according to a public notice from the rural municipality of Piney.
A similar evacuation order was amended later on Sunday for the nearby townsite of Sandilands, allowing residents to return to the community if they want.
However, RM of Piney officials warned that smoky conditions still exist in Sandilands — presenting a possible health hazard to those who are sensitive to smoke — even though there is no longer a fire risk.
Evacuation orders were also lifted Sunday in the neighbouring rural municipality of Stuartburn, meaning residents of Caliento and Lonesand can return home.
More than 160 firefighters from 27 different municipal fire departments have been fighting the blaze, according to the Manitoba government. The wildfire has destroyed more than 19,000 hectares of grassland and forest.
Provincial officials say they believe cooler, less windy weather over the weekend will help fire crews control the flames.
Meanwhile, an 18,000-hectare forest fire continues to burn near Bissett in northeastern Manitoba.
No structures have been destroyed in that fire to date. About 116 firefighters, support staff and equipment are on site to fight the blaze.
