Green IT- An Environment friendly Technology

Today’s corporate world revolves around the globalized business, multinational environment and mobile workforce all equipped   with the best IT infrastructure. However, these technological developments result in using up more of the environmental resources available around us. Thus, organizations need to look out for techniques, which would keep them ahead in the technologically competitive world while shouldering the social responsibility of energy conservations, global warming. The use of environmentally sustainable computing techniques, or Green computing will go a long way making technology holistically efficient.

Wikipedia defines Green IT as “the study and practice of designing, manufacturing, using, and disposing of computers, servers, and associated subsystems which includes monitors, printers, storage devices, and networking and communications systems—efficiently and effectively with minimal or no impact on the environment”.  With an aim to reduce the use of hazardous materials, be energy efficient, promote the recycling of obsolete products and factory waste, the concept of going green makes the organization environment friendly and cost efficient.  Such Green initiatives increase the availability of IT infrastructure and provides a platform for a higher level of IT provisioning and management.

The need to go for green computing results from the in depth understanding of the fact that huge data centers with high levels of IT infrastructure consumes very large quantities of renewable and not so renewable resources.  While continuously performing backend, processing it adds up emails and documents with an option to read or discarded by the user.  Green IT implies the need to reduce wastage of electronic parts, resources such as power and electricity, and physical space used by data centers.  Further, with government agencies entering into the foray of green environment, a number of regulations demand the organization to be compliant to Green IT practices, making the employers and employees environmentally responsible.

Going green for the organization now rests on the data center, which is the heart of an enterprise. Making this energy efficient will go along way is saving the resources. The concept of cloud computing services and virtualization provides for a more sustainable strategy to transforming data centre footprints. This paves way for a more long-term solution to power management and environment friendly IT infrastructure.

The virtualization buzz would help to reduce the footprints of the servers for managed hosting services thereby making the enterprises energy efficient. Such virtualization of data centers and servers increases IT efficiency, reducing power consumption and cooling costs. This green IT environment facilitates easy disaster recovery and business continuity while adhering to the industry norms.
