Secure Databases with Enterprise Data Management Software
According to 2011 State of Security Survey conducted by Symantec, small businesses incurred about $100,000 loss and large businesses around $271,000 loss due to cyber attacks in 2010. The survey also revealed that with the economy failing, most hackers use the technique of social engineering to gain access to critical data.
As technology advances, cyber attacks are becoming more and more sophisticated and the hackers increasingly skillful. Today’s hackers are adept in cracking any code or password to make inroads into any security network or system and thereby get hold of sensitive data and mission-critical information stored on computers. Since these criminals leave no stone unturned to put their devious plans into action, it is very difficult to track their mode of operation. Most hackers are rarely caught as they do crime very stealthily and neatly.
Today companies and organizations face different kinds of cybercrimes ranging from software privacy, identity theft, distribution of viruses, stealing of sensitive information, financial fraud to interruption of network traffic. And these cybercrimes come from two different sources-external hackers and internal hackers.
External Hackers
There are two types of external hackers – one who means business and the other who does it for fun. Some people break in just to test their strengths and weaknesses and therefore they would just damage the system or network. However, others hack sites with a clear purpose. It would be either to steal crucial sensitive information or to destroy it. Another category of external hackers is those who are very dangerous as they are experts in this field. They are paid for their services, as they are capable of anything like toppling any business, bringing down any company, or crashing any stock market.
Internal Hackers
Internal hackers are either corrupt or dissatisfied employees or ex-employees who indulge in criminal activities for revenge, personal gratification or financial gain. They are more dangerous than the external hackers as they are trusted by the company and know the company inside out. This helps them to break into any system and retrieve critical information.
Most companies and organizations rely on point solutions to contain data theft. Even though these solutions are just not enough, it provides security to production databases alone. However, data security is not extended to those databases that lay exposed in non-production environments. What the companies require is enterprise data management software that ensures data privacy, data security and compliance. It uses data masking techniques to secure databases in production and non-production environments.
