Plan an awesome holiday to Sani Pass!

Have you ever wanted to be somewhere where you could feel as if when you reached up you could touch the clouds in the sky and have the earth far below you at the same time?  This is exactly what a holiday in Sani Pass is like – a heavenly experience!  It is an awesome zig zagging mountain pass that takes you up to some 3200 metres above sea level.

If you are going to enjoy this scenic route, also popularly known as the Roof of Africa, you can celebrate the journey by having a meal at the highest pub in South Africa, at 2874 metres above sea level – what a way to get high!  This fantastic Pass takes you along the Drakensberg right up to the northern mountains of Lesotho, and it is also the only border between South Africa and Lesotho.  Most visitors from the EU, USA and some Commonwealth countries only require a passport, but be sure to check with your local authorities before leaving on your trip.

This route has a history – it used to be a trade route for merchants of wool and mohair from Lesotho. They would come down the pass with loaded mules and donkeys and then return with the bare essentials such as blankets, clothes and maize meal to help their communities survive.  David Alexander, the founder of Makhotlong Mountain Transport, the first company in the area, first opened the road to vehicle traffic in 1955 – a wonderful achievement that brought adventure tourism to Lesotho.

Speaking of adventure, many hikers come to the area to climb up the mountain peaks and experience the exhilaration of the view from the top.  Bookings are generally over a couple of days and children can also cope quite well with some of the routes.  Accommodation is provided by means of overnight huts.  Be sure to pack for all weathers, as it is often said that you can have four seasons in one day – hot, cold, wet or windy and dry.  Take note that the pass is usually closed when it is snowing.  If you do come in winter, bring a snow chain along just in case and drive extra carefully as ice on the road is a hazard.

You can find backpackers, lodges, B&B’s and guest houses in Sani Pass, whatever best suits your needs and budget.  Sani Pass accommodation promises a relaxing experience with enough solitude and beauty to soothe your mind and soul.
