What are Augmentin and BLADDER INFECTIONS?
HOW BLADDER INFECTIONS OCCUR
The urine inside the bladder is normally sterile. There should not be any bacteria living there. However, the vaginal area and the pe#nis both have bacteria that live in these warm, moist environments. Bacteria can start to move up the urethra (the tube that empties urine out of the bladder) and if they reach the bladder, can start to multiply. Normally, these bacteria are flushed out of the urethra by urination before this can happen. Sometimes, however, for a variety of reasons, the bacteria takes hold and causes an infection. The reason girls are more prone to bladder infections than boys is the female urethra is much shorter, therefore the bacteria has less distance to travel into the bladder.
TOP FIVE CAUSES OF BLADDER INFECTION
Irritation of the urethra
Holding the urine in
Anatomic abnormality
Constipation
Improper wiping…
FIVE SYMPTOMS OF BLADDER INFECTION
Pain or burning with urination.
Frequent urination.
Urgency – your child will have a very strong, painful urge to urinate.
Fever – mild infections often won’t cause fever, but moderate to severe bladder infections that involve the kidneys do cause fever.
Foul-smelling urine
Be aware that these symptoms don’t necessarily mean there IS a bladder infection, they just mean there MIGHT BE a bladder infection.
TREATING BLADDER INFECTIONS
Antibiotics. One of them are Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium) is a prescription antibiotic medication. It is used to treat a variety of infections like bladder infection
How Does It Work?
Augmentin contains two different medications: amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium (also known as clavulanic acid or simply clavulanate). It belongs to a group of medications known as aminopenicillins, which is part of a larger group of medications known as beta-lactam antibiotics (named after the ring-like “lactam” structure of these antibiotics). Amoxicillin works by stopping bacteria from making cell walls, which eventually causes the bacteria to die. However, many bacteria have developed resistance to amoxicillin and similar antibiotics by producing enzymes called beta-lactamases. Beta-lactamases break the beta-lactam ring, making amoxicillin and similar antibiotics ineffective.
Augmentin side effects are Diarrhoea, Upset Stomach, Allergic skin reactions such as rash, itching, Nausea, Vomiting
Dosage
ADULTS AND CHILDREN (OVER 40KG IN WEIGHT): Usually the dose is 500mg taken at 12 hourly intervals, or 250mg taken at 8 hourly intervals. In the case of severe infections, a physician may prescribe 875mg taken at 12 hourly intervals, or 500mg taken at 8 hourly intervals.
