Use Food to Improve Your Mood

Many of us have been trained to think that comfort foods are bad and must be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Other times, comfort foods can be utterly healthy and good for us to eat. There are several foods that basically can improve your moods when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional boost, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really terrific at beating back depression. You should make sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. When you would like to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks especially, are high in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for elevating your mood. This is because the B vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try consuming a couple of eggs to cheer up!

Put together several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you will feel. Not just that, nuts, in particular, are a great protein source.

If you wish to defeat depression, try eating some cold water fish. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. DHA and omega-3s are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can really help you overcome depression.

Grains can be wonderful for driving away a terrible mood. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you feel happier. They can help you feel full for longer also, helping you feel better. Feeling starved can truly make you feel awful! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not hard for your stomach to digest. You digest these grains faster than other things which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You were simply waiting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you be healthier. Now you are aware that it helps you to raise your moods as well!

As you can see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Test out these hints instead!
