Red Salute: Absconder screwball Stanwyck meets no nonsense cadet Young in this clone of It Occurred One Day with crazy sociopolitical wrinkle. Barbara’s boyfriend (Albright) is an interigator who makes Communists talk. This is a definitely a new twist. Barry Lyndon: Attractive, methodically detailed period piece with megastars O’Neal as Thackeray’s 18th-century Irish rogue idol who desires prosperity however lets it go to his head. The Age of Innocence: Humble although powerful rendition of Edith Wharton’s novel in reference to an obstructed romance between an involved lawyer and a divorcee, in 1870s Manhattan. Starts off with a super Jazz Age montage opening, then gets slowed down in static, stagy therapy as older Boles interconnects the tale of his ill-fated event to his grandson. Cast includes Irene Dunne, John Boles, Lionel Atwill, Helen Westley, Laura Wish Teams, and Julie Haydon. (81 minutes, 1934)
A Bullet for Sandoval: Ex-Confederate Hilton plots reprisal on don Borgnine, the grand daddy of Hilton’s child, for indirectly causing the toddler to die. Cast includes Ernest Borgnine, George Hilton, Alberto De Mendoza, and Gustavo Rojo. (91 minutes, 1970)
Rocky 4: Entirely synthetic (and unessential) continuation has Rocky doin’ what a guy’s gotta do, avenging a buddy’s downfall and fighting for the U.S.A. against a superhuman Russian champ. Still, Stallone knows how to press all the right buttons, particularly in an awesome teaching montage.
