5 Tips on writing lyrics
Some people believe that talent in music including writing lyrics, is something that some people were just born with. I personally believe that. However, it doesn’t mean that you can not improve in music, particularly in songwriting, there’s always a way to improve and I guess you have found this page because you’re looking to be better in writing songs. Just keep reading and I will share to you some practices that you may want to adapt.
Here are some tips on writing lyrics that have personally worked for me, and may work for you too.
1. Write about something that you yourself have experienced.
This is probably the millionth time that you’ve heard this but yes, this is very true. If you can personally relate to what you’re writing and you have
personally experienced it, writing lyrics will be a lot easier for you. You can write about the time when you failed one of your subjects in college or when
you caught your professor dating your housemate. You’ll never run out of ideas to write, just make sure that they are interesting and many people can
relate, that’s when it will be most effective.
2. Stop worrying about the “rhyme”
It doesn’t mean that you will totally ignore how your lines rhyme, but just don’t be so much technical and stop worrying about it. As long as it doesn’t
make your ears bleed, go for it! Music is meant to be fun not technical you know.
3. Use common phrases as titles
No such thing and It’s been a while, yes you hear them everyday, in the subway, at the office, in the gym or at the supermarket. That’s what makes it
catchy and people remember it. Remember “no such thing” and it’s “been a while”?
4. Always have a writing material and digital recorder handy.
When you’re outside and and creative juices start to come into your head from nowhere, Don’t let it go to waste, record it. Your digital recorder such
as the ones that’s pre installed in your celphone will be a big help, or if you don’t have one, get a piece of paper and write it on there.
5. Learn form the pros!
There’s a bunch of very talented songwriters out there, go online and check out their lyrics, look at how they write, if you like their style, try to apply it to your own writing style, if you don’t, then dump it and look for other artists.
