Since the time of independence, there has been a lot of development in all aspects of the nation. The development in transportation in India has also taken place, but the development is not uniform. The public transport, mainly the bus and railway system, is the main mode of transport for many people in the country. A lot of money has been utilized to improve the infrastructure of the country over the next few years.

Bus Travel in India

Bus is the main mode of public transport and buses reach every corner of the country. Buses take about 90% of the public commuters in India and serve as an inexpensive medium of transport for all people. They are used by most Indian people as a means of transportation.

The intervals with which the buses reach the villages is quite far apart and not so frequent, therefore people commuting in these buses should know the timings of the buses beforehand or they will have to wait for a long time. In the cities and metros, this is certainly not the case. The infrastructure is better and the intervals of buses are quite frequent.

The Factors to Note

The experience of opting for bus transport for long distances can be quite different and it depends on a lot of factors. These include the cities being commuted to and from, the distance, the condition of the buses, and the roads.

The experience is certainly good if the roads involve the national highways. This mode of transport has been improved by the government, and the government has introduced a variety of buses that include Volvo buses, A/C and non-A/C buses, with the aim to help decongest roads and attract passengers.

Despite the improvement in the transportation service in India, several aspects of transport sector is penetrated with problems due to increasing population, and the increasing buses not meeting the requirement of this increasing population. The demand for public transport has been increasing by around 10% every year and the current infrastructure will not be able to meet with the demands of the rising population.

Traffic jams, road safety problems, and accidents are a few of the problems encountered by this sector due to the increasing rise in the personalized vehicles and intermediate transport system as compared to the public transport system. Increase in traffic and limited road space have reduced the peak-hour speed to 5 to 10 km per hour in central areas.
