Azeri – The Second Best to Zenyatta in Career Earnings and Racing Statistics
A handful of horses saw their racing dreams coming to reality only after they had crossed their prime; an extremely famous and renowned racing horse that was known for his extraordinary growth from a regular racing horse to a champion only after his sophomore season was Seabiscuit. Azeri, foaled in 1998, graduated to a champion filly so beautifully that she was inducted into the Hall of Fame for her performances as an older filly.
Azeri was sired by Jade Hunter who was the offspring of the legendary sire and race horse Mr. Prospector. Even though broodmare Zodiac Miss didn’t boast of a very extraordinary foal, Azeri was the first and the only starter coming from her with the racing characteristics inherited from grandsire Silic who was a Breeder’s Cup Mile winner.
Azeri rode a 11 race winning streak under trainer Laura de Seroux. Her first win came from a six furlong race at the Santa Anita late in November, 2001, almost towards the end of her three year old season. In her fourth year of racing, Azeri won several graded stakes including Grade 1 Breeder’s Cup Distaff, Apple Blossom Handicap and Clement L. Hirsch Handicap. Azeri entered her fifth year season with fierce opening winning Apple Blossom and the Clement L. Hirsch handicaps second time in a row. However it was during her 12th race into the Lady’s Secret Breeder’s Cup Handicap when she finished second following an injury to her tendon. Turned over to trainer Wayne D. Lukas, a hall of Famer, Azeri made a quick recovery and made a comeback with yet another win in the Apple Blossom.
Azeri most impressive win was from the Go For Wand Handicap after a thrilling competition against multiple Graded stakes winner Sightseek. It was only towards the end of her sixth year that Azeri was retired after a 17 wins out of 24 starts status. Azeri was awarded the American Horse of the year title in 2002 followed by three consecutive years of American Champion Older Female Horse from 2002 to 2004. Six year later, Azeri got inducted into the Hall of Fame and National Museum of Racing. She also closed her racing career as the second highest money earning filly with approximately $4 million second only to Zenyatta at $6million plus.
