Google after Panda
SEO just got a lot harder and more time consuming after Google’s Panda update back on February 24th. of this year. The Panda Updatecaught just about all search engine optimizers off guard and has affected the amount of traffic and sales for a lot of site owners and Webmasters. SEO will never be the same again. According to Amit Singhal, a Google Fellow, the update was aimed at separating the high-quality sites from the low-quality sites. So what in Google’s eyes constitutes a “high-quality” site?
For the past 10+ years, Google utilized its PageRank methodology to rank websites. If you had a website about basketball, and you got a link from ESPN. com – Google would notice that your site is a quality site about basketball. It was similar to a voting system, when a relevant and high authority site linked to you, it would count as a vote. And the more votes your website received, the better your website would rank. Of course relevance played a roll, as Google gave more value to sites linking to you which were about a similar topic as yours. In addition, authority mattered, so one link from ESPN. com may hold more value than 5 links from sports related blogs which weren’t as popular.
Webmasters should not concentrate their efforts so much on just one algorithm factor but rather they should concentrate on producing Web sites that contain high-quality content and then they will have a much better chance of having their site rank well on Google for the long-term. Sites hit the hardest appear to be Websites that had a lot of either duplicate pages or pages where the content was very similar to other pages on their site.
What can SEO company do to counter the effects of Panda? First if you have any duplicate content on their sites you should remove it. Then go to Google Webmasters Tool page and ask Google to remove those pages from Google’s index. If you can’t or won’t remove the duplicate content, place those duplicate pages into site’s robots. txt file and exclude especially Googlebot from crawling and indexing those particular pages. Also you should add at least one new article per week, more would be better. Make sure that your articles need to be well researched, well written and properly edited. The articles need to be of sufficient enough length to cover all the salient points of the article. If you have a blog then update it on a regular basis. Preferably at least 1-2 times a week, but daily would be much better. It appears that Google is looking for basically authority websites to rank on page 1 of their SERPS. So if you have a new domain…this is not going to be a quick fix. It will take some time for your website to be considered an authority in a given niche market. Lastly make sure Web content is *original and unique. *
