Volkswagen Beetle Canterbury
My daughter and her partner loves all things vintage – and their retro shop in Canterbury has turned out to be a thriving business. I am terribly proud of them. Last weekend I decided to take them both out for a nice lunch. I was aware they’d changed cars, so I wasn’t sure what to look out for, but I was expecting the usual sensible Volkswagen with lots of boot space.
I’ve always admired my daughter’s sense of style – and I certainly wasn’t disappointed when I first caught a glimpse of her brand new car, Volkswagen’s latest take on the iconic Beetle. This fabulous car is true to its notorious and much-loved predecessor, but with a thoroughly modern and less ‘girly’ edge. The little vase on the dash has gone for good, replaced by altogether raunchier twin exhausts at the back. The Beetle has the look of a sports car and certainly suits a sporty driver, being longer, wider and lower than before. Herbie has gone cool – as my daughter and her partner say.
Even so, the classic proportions of the vw beetle canterbury are unmistakeable. The round headlights, double layered glove-box, chrome trimmed instrument cluster and radio surround, along with the leather trimmed gear knob and handbrake grip are all key features of clever retro-styling. While air-conditioning, sat-nav, a panoramic sunroof, fixed rear spoiler and more boot space (my daughter’s boot is stuffed to the brim with beautiful tea dresses, and boxes of shoes and handbags) are a firm reminder that we’re well into the 21st century.
