When it comes to buying a digital camera, everyone always seems to want to know how many megapixels the camera has. Cameras are often marketed on the fact that they contain a high amount of megapixels, and this is often what determines their price point. In this article, we’ll take a look at what megapixels really are and whether they should be a determining factor in whether you buy a certain camera model or not.
What is a megapixel? A megapixel is one million pixels per inch. A singular pixel is one point in an image with a specific brightness and colour; when all the individual pixels are grouped together it forms the image as a whole. Essentially, the number of megapixels determines how sharp the overall image will look and how much it can be enlarged until the quality starts to deter.
The megapixel count is sometimes all that matters to people when buying a new camera, but a more important factor to consider is exactly what you will be using the camera for. If you intend to take large poster-sized photos then yes you will need a camera with a very high megapixel count. In this scenario, the more pixels the better as the image will not suffer less from resizing.
If however you will only be taking standard sized photographs, the megapixel count will have less importance. In this scenario, a camera with 4 – 6 megapixels will be perfectly sufficient. It would also be advisable not to seek masses of megapixels in this situation as it will allow you to save cash on your purchase.
