In the yesteryears, the Maharajas indulged in the royal sport of hunting and Nagarhole is said to be one such location where this sport was carried out at. Nagarhole which is 80 km away from Mysore is the home to the famous Nagarhole National Park, also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park. Nagarhole is intersected by a quite a few streams that wriggle right through the dense forests of the park, like little serpents. Thus the name Nagarhole perfectly describes the place as Nagar means ‘snake’ and hole means ‘stream’.
This national park expanding over a massive 247 square miles is the dwelling place for several species of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects. Snakes, porcupines, sloth bears, Indian bison, red giant flying squirrel, four horned antelopes, mouse deer and jackal are the most commonly found animals here. Nagarhole is proud to have the extremely endangered Oriental white backed vulture as one amongst the over 250 species of birds that can be found in its dense green forests.
The diverse flora of Nagarhole including Rosewood, Teak, and Sandalwood contribute to its enchanting greenery and are also the dwelling place to its abundant birdlife. One of the many rivers zigzagging through Nagarhole, the Kabini River not just adds to the beauty quotient of the park, but also helps develop and nurture its ever growing collection of water animals such as the marsh crocodiles, toads, terrestrial tortoises, ducks, herons etc. A glitter of colors is contributed by the large number of butterflies that also dwell here.
Adventure amongst the wilderness: Nagarhole National Park attracts nature and wildlife lovers from all across the globe. As a measure to spice up the visit to the national park, elephant rides, Jeep safari and boat rides are available for tourists visiting the park. Groups of tourists can rent a vehicle and go around the park or can hire a guide who would take them closer into the wilderness and also give them some insight into the wildlife that lies deeper in the jungle. There are beautiful trekking trails for the enthusiastic trekkers who want to make the best of the scenic prettiness that Nagarhole has on display.
When to visit: The weather is best between the months of November and February. However, it is during April and May that maximum wildlife can be spotted, as it is during these months when they venture out into the lake.
How to get to Nagarhole: Bangalore positions 220 km away from Nagarhole is its nearest airport. Rail connectivity is available from Mysore which is 96km away. Beautiful highways connecting Bangalore and Mysore to Nagarhole make the roadway a good option to get to Nagarhole.
