Don’t Be a Stranger To Your Heart

How well do you know your heart? How is its rhythm? Do your cardiac chambers have the right size? Are you prone to heart attacks? It only takes an ECG device to get the answers to all of these questions and determination to preserve that single heart of yours.

The heart is one of the vital organs of the body; or perhaps the most vital organ as it is the source of life. It has many parts, each with a distinct function so when one of them ceases to operate normally a person can suffer from a heart disease.

Our heart has countless electrical activities which we cannot monitor by simply using our senses. We need a special medical equipment called electrocardiogram or ECG to find out what’s happening in our heart.

This ECG is used to examine the movements of the heart using a set of electrodes which are attached to the chest area. It only takes five minutes to perform electrocardiography, which is the process of gathering information about the heart’s electrical activities, and during this process the ECG can gather information about the heart’s rate, rhythm, previous heart attacks, enlarged cardiac chambers, and conduction abnormalities among others.

The ECG device rigorously inspects all parts of the heart such as the chambers, valves, muscles, coronary arteries and veins, and the lining. It can also detect heart diseases such as coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy, and valvular heart disease among many others.

What the device cannot detect, however, are the causes or factors that trigger a heart disease. Still, electrocardiography is considered very useful as individuals who have a predisposition to heart diseases will be able to plan their future heath care needs.

ECG tests are conducted in hospitals or health centers that are licensed to perform this type of medical test and other kinds of life line screenings. The electrodes are attached to one’s chest by using tiny suction cups or Velcro strips.

All data gathered from the heart shall be recorded by the ECG and it shall be stored in the computer.

Nowadays, people can choose to undergo electrocardiography in the hospital or at home as handheld ECGs are widely sold. In the hospital, however, you will get accurate results since a licensed technician facilitates the procedure while at home it’s either you or a family member who operates on the machine.

What’s more, you don’t have to go through the hassle of cleaning the ECG equipment after you have received your results. At home you have no choice but to clean the item otherwise it could easily accumulate dirt and soot if you put it away without cleaning it first.

What’s good about a home handheld ECG though is the fact that it is portable, convenient and more affordable than the 12-lead ECG equipment. You can also regularly check your heart’s activities and just store it in your USB or choice of computer hardware so that anytime you feel like showing it to your doctor you can just take it with you.

Whether portable or not, an ECG device remains to be the best medical tool that one can depend on to monitor his heart.
