For as long as crystal files or susension files have exisited, so has the confusion about the difference between A4 and Foolscap suspension files. Is A4 bigger than foolscap or is it foolscap suspension files that you require.
So let the confusion be over. First of all, Foolscap suspension files are bigger than A4 suspension files. In 90% of cases your filing cabinet will take foolscap suspension filing. All the standard office 2, 3 and 4 drawer metal filing cabinets will take standard foolscap hanging files.
So what units take a4 suspension files. The likes of your wooden desk drawer unit and under desk pedestal will generally take the A4 files. You can always check this out by checking the measurement from edge to edge of the drawer unit. A4 suspension files measure 340mm in width and foolscap files measure 405mm in width.
There is another type of suspension file. Lateral suspension files are accsessed from the side of the file and the label system is on the side of the suspension file. You generally use these in tambour filing units and they also some in two sizes. Either 270mm or 330mm wide. Lateral suspension files are most regualrly used with larger filing systems.
So suspension files can be used in more than just filing cabinets. There are filing trollies and filing boxes that are desigined to take suspension files. Filing boxes can be extremely handy when you want to move some of your files into storgae.
Filing trollies are a great invention and can be really handy for transporting files that have to used by multiple departments.
