For more than five hundred years, it served as home of emperors and their households, as well as the ceremonial and political center of Chinese government. Containing about thousand buildings and covering an area of over seventy two thousand square feet, this is testimony to the greatness of traditional Chinese Palatial architecture. It is a declared UNESCO World Heritage Site. Now, it homes the Palace Museum. One of the other important landmarks of Beijing is Tiananmen Square. It is the centre of Beijing city. Tiananmen Square is the largest public square of the world and a must see for all visitors. The square is surrounded by grand buildings including the Great Hall of the People, the Museum of Chinese History, the Museum of the Chinese Revolution, the Qianmen Gate and the Forbidden City. It is also home to the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall and the Monument to the People’s Martyrs. Another architectural marvel of note is National Stadium which stands proudly reminding one of the grand success of Beijing Olympics of two thousand and eight. Two important modern day constructions are CCTV tower and World Trade Center Tower III.
