New Ampera On Its Way

More and more electric vehicles are hitting the market, appealing to drivers not only for their environmental merit but also for the financial benefits, namely zero road tax, congestion charge exemption, and lower running costs (price of electricity vs price of fuel). Although the cars themselves are expensive, many buyers are seeing the long-term advantages to owning them.

The only stumbling block for cars currently on the market seems to be the vehicles’ ranges, but the new Vauxhall Ampera claims to have resolved that problem. The model is designed to run primarily on electric power, but in order to alleviate ‘range anxieties’, is fitted with a small petrol engine to keep it mobile if the power runs out. A kind of reverse-hybrid, the engine is a back-up rather than the main power source, giving the car advantages for city drivers such as lower noise and pollution levels.

Good news for environment enthusiasts then, but what’s the performance like? Test driving the new Vauxhall in Maidenhead, it’s clear that the Ampera is well-engineered and responsive, offering a very enjoyable drive. With smooth acceleration and neat handling it’s a pleasant ride, if not hugely exciting.

The interior has a futuristic feel, with two information centres and a central dash pad that’s inspired by the iPad. Space is generous too – passengers will have plenty of room in the front and rear and the boot is well-shaped and spacious too. There’s all the safety kit you’d expect too to ensure you and the family are well-protected.

Overall, it’s a good car, if on the pricey side. The cost is offset by low running costs though, so for those who can afford the initial purchase, it’s well worth it.
