Should Uncle Mo Have Been Retired or Was It Too Early?

To many of Mo’s fans it still seems like disparage of his competence as a 10 furlong race horse following his fade-off in the Breeder’s Classic. And, as an avid fan and follower of this incredible race horse, I agree no less. Not looking at the technical and factual aspects of the race performances by the Rapole product, the racing fraternity comprising of both the worlds of likes and dislikes for Mo, should spare some practicality when it comes to letting off a judgemental opinion about what Mo was capable of and what not.
If it’s the facts everyone would like to feast their strategic and practical minds on, Mo was very finely deserving of the two year old championship he earned following his unprecedented performances as a young race horse. The same horse that is today questioned for his participation in the Breeder’s and Triple Crown races, was seen last year put up a grand act in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile. The questions weren’t raised then about if it was a fluke but firmly believed that he was a capable horse even comparable to none other than Seabiscuit.
Not to mention, he even broke the invincible Secretariat’s time record for the Champagne Stakes running it in 1:34, 2/5 seconds faster than the former world champion did.
The racing thoroughbreds are bred so as to produce fast, enduring runners, so a question if this Indian Charlie colt is anything short of it, seems baseless. The biological and physical interference of their anatomy may sometimes lead to shortcomings that surface in the form of disorders and illnesses that may or may not prove fatal for the horses. There’s no reason why Uncle Mo’s gastrointestinal illness should then be treated as a career end.
Mo was diagnosed with the rare liver disorder right before his Triple Crown debut and many frowned on why he was even considered a contender; my question is, if he ran out of luck, should he be considered any less of a threat? May be not. Uncle Mo was as capable of giving everybody a run for their money as he is today even as he stands retired ready to stud. Even Secretariat lost battles against Sham, the audience mostly believes in what the eyes show them but there’s much more to horses of their kind.
Uncle Mo, had he not been retired and diagnosed with the disorder, most definitely had what a real race horse needed. His desire to race and win, understanding the competition and gauging the contention made him what he was, an incredible favourite for as long he ran. If given a chance as a four year old, I firmly believe, he could be a tall order for others to accomplish. Racing fans from around the globe still consider fathoming the rightfulness in Rapole’s decision to retire Mo, but could there be a scope for gamble for the upcoming season? We will have to wait and see.
