People often think that there are so many watch companies around today, and although this may be true to an extent, before the 1950’s, there were so many more watch companies in existence.
The “Quartz revolution” of the early 1970’s decimated the Swiss watch industry, causing many of these watch companies to close down or be bought out by other watch companies such as Swatch.
Therefore many people will concentrate on collecting vintage watches that have stood the test of time and display a look or style of an era past, or as a collectable item.
Without a doubt, the world’s best branded antique watch would have to be Rolex. Rolex is known worldwide as one of the most prestigious watch companies, and one brand of watch that is sought after by young and old.
Like a classic vintage car, a classic Rolex watch of a particular era or model can set the auction world on fire when one comes up for sale. This may include for example the infamous Paul Newman Rolex Daytona Cosmograph, the Rolex Milgauss, or an original classic Rolex “Prince” from the 1920’s or 1930’s.
One of the main reasons that Rolex is so well known is that one of the founders, Hans Wilsdorf in the early 1900’s, did something that no other watch company did before – advertise, and therefore “brand” his watch as a somewhat household name.
Although not the oldest watch company in the world – in fact they have been around only for a “mere” 100 years, Rolex still continue to brand themselves as a watch for the elite.
Distinguished firms such as Patek Philippe have also made a named for themselves as producers of some of the finest quality watch movements in the world, and have long been regarded as the best of the best.
Although not branding themselves to the masses in large publicity stunts, Patek Philippe have continued along their “tradition” and branding that, “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.”
This has become quite a successful logo to promote one of the finest watch companies in the world as they continue to produce some truly exceptional and exciting watches.
Another “household” name in watches is of course Omega.
Founded in the 1800’s, Omega have continually changed their styles with the times and therefore always continued to produce watches that are always popular with people conscious of style and collectors alike.
Following styles and eras can be so easily seen with the watches that they produced, none so more as during the 1970’s with wonderful retro style cases that following the style of the time and are equally as popular today as they were years ago.
