Chadar Trek-Some Do’s and Don’ts

Walking on frozen sheet of ice is by far the most exhilarating experience for a mountain trekker. The Chadar Trek is one of the wildest and toughest treks of its kind in the world. The trek gets its name from the fact that it is a trek over the frozen river of Zanskar during extreme winter as the word ‘Chadar’ means ‘frozen layer’.

There are some important Do’s and Don’ts that a trekker needs to keep in mind while attempting to trek at Zanskar Mountain Chadar. Let us have a look at some of them:

Do’s
– Weather at high altitude is usually pleasant on when it is clear and sunny but this can change without warning and the temperatures may dip way below freezing point. Do carry along very extremely warm clothes, durable waterproof trekking shoes and gloves to keep away from frost bites.
– The Himalayas is dotted with loads of temples and monasteries. Do dress neatly and show respect when entering these religious places and villages. Avoid skimpy clothing and cover yourself from shoulders to knees, and take off hats and shoes when entering places where shrines are kept.
– Since the route goes through uninhabited regions, encountering shops on the way is not a surety. Do carry the ample energy food stock and water for the trek.
– The trail of this very difficult trek takes you through some very challenging stretches of waterways and rocky mountains. Bruises and cuts are quite common in that case. Do carry along important medicines with you, to be able to nurse these bruises instantly.
– As the trail takes you through some very isolated areas, in case of emergencies, you may not get help. Do make sure you keep your near and dear well informed of your route, so as to aid them to locate you in case needed.

Don’ts:
– The Chadar Trek is one of the most spectacular trails in the world as it goes through some exquisite scenic regions of Himalayas. The essence of this prettiness is lost if the place is not kept clean. Locals take a lot of effort into maintaining the cleanliness of the region. As a responsible trekker, do not pollute the region by throwing away wastes or rubbish.
– – Many of the local hill tribe villagers drink the water from streams so don’t bathe in them. The fishes from the rivers provide many different kinds of food for the local people.
– Around religious places, and inside the large number of monasteries that you would come across in the Himalayas, house images of Buddhas. Do not touch, point your feet at, or turn your back on Buddha images. The local take offence of this.
– The religious heads at monasteries are Monks dressed in maroon robes. Do not click pictures of or try to talk and thereby disturb monks during their prayer times. They are extremely sensitive about this.
