What is Milling Machine?

A milling machine is a machine used to shape and cut solid materials such as metals, wood, plastics, or even brass. A unique feature of these machines is that they move the workpiece radially against the rotating milling cutter, which cuts on its sides as well as its top.

There are various types of milling machines.

  • Column mill: It is the most basic type of milling machine. It has a few basic parts and is simple to operate. It drills materials using the vertically suspended cutting device.
  • Turret mill: It is more versatile than the column mill. It can produce different types of products because the spindle can be aligned in different positions.
  • C-frame mill: It is very popular in industries, as it can handle large milling jobs conveniently.
  • Horizontal mill: In this type of mill, the cutter is located on an arbor. It is good for heavy cutting, such as slots and groves.
  • Vertical mill: A vertical mill is very similar to a horizontal mill, except that its spindle has a vertical orientation. It is good for plunge drilling and cutting.

Milling machines may be manually operated, mechanically automated, or digitally automated via computer numerical control (CNC).

The CNC machine, also called machining centers, are computer controlled mills that provide extremely precise parts. It is usually set up via computer aided design technology. It provides highly complex engineered parts such as engraved elements and relief sculptures. The CNC machines are also very cost effective as they require very less operator input after initial setup. With the declining prices of computers and open source CNC software, the entry price of CNC machines has further reduced.

If you want to purchase a milling machine, then you must consider the above factors as well as:

  • How much complex work you want the machine to do?
  • How many axis variants do you need?
  • How much powerful is the machine?
  • What is the speed of the machine?
  • Which attachments come with the machine?
  • How much you are willing to pay for the machine?

Consider your needs carefully before zeroing on the right type of milling machine.
