Bamboo Flooring
Bamboo flooring is made of bamboo plants especially the Moso species. It is becoming one of the most popular flooring types, mainly due to its distinctive look and a big variety of colors. Today the top flooring manufacturers are also producing a wide range of bamboo floorings to meet the growing requirements of customers.
Traditional Bamboo Flooring
It is most widely demanded in Asia, and is composed of thin bamboo stems that are sliced as flat as feasible. Generally they are sliced in similar lengths and some manufacturers varnish it. As far as the installation of this type of flooring in concerned, it is simply nailed down onto the wooden boards or the bigger pieces of bamboo itself.
Since this procedure results in more space between each bamboo stem, the bamboo flooring is more suitable for titled houses where flatness and tightness is not much required. It also provides better air circulation even during the summer months.
Manufactured Bamboo Flooring
The manufactured bamboo flooring uses mature bamboo culms that are cut into strips. Initially these culms are cut to length and subsequently sliced into various strips in accordance with width desired. The outer rough skin is removed by boiling it in lime or boric acid. Having done this, the strips are glued onto boards, both in horizontal and vertical orders, under heat pressure of up to 1,200 tons PSI. Usually, horizontal boards come up with 15 layers while vertical have up to 19.
The natural color of bamboo is similar to that of beech wood. Engineered bamboo flooring can be darkened by heating. The more it is subjected to heat, the darker color it will achieve. However, intense heating can also weaken it, so the lighter the color, the stronger it will be.
Advantages of Bamboo Flooring
As mentioned, bamboo is an eye-catching substitute for general flooring owing to its physical similarities to hardwoods. Bamboo floor manufacturers have been promoting it on account of its excellent durability, extraordinary hardness along with reliable resistance to allergic insects as well as moisture.
Another most important defining feature of bamboo flooring is that it is one of the most eco-friendly products. Bamboo is known for replenishing itself very quickly unlike typical hardwood trees that can take several decades to be prepared for another harvesting.
Disadvantage of Bamboo Flooring
The only disadvantage of bamboo flooring is related to those flooring that use urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesive during the lamination process. UF resin emits volatile organic compound (VOC), which is harmful to indoor air quality and triggers various symptoms like nose, eye, and throat irritation; allergic reactions; coughing; skin rash; fatigue; and can even cause cancer in certain situations. However, there are manufacturers who use very small amount of UF resin for lamination purposes and endeavor to maintain its safety for human health.
Maintenance
To maintain bamboo flooring is one of the easiest tasks. Since it is pre-finished by the manufacturer, it does not need to be stained by the users. However, it needs to be periodically swept or occasionally cleaned with a damp mop.
