Development of Southern Indian Railway

Indian Railway is the fourth largest railway network in the world. It has more than 64,215 km of track and 7,083 stations. It has a number of railway zones for proper management of railway network and aims at providing best service to the passengers. Southern Railways forms one of the 17 zones of Indian Railways with headquarters at Chennai and six divisions, namely Chennai, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, Salem, Palakkad, and Thiruvananthapuram.

Southern Railways – Different from Other Zones

Southern Railway is different from other zones of Indian Railway or IRCTC owing to the fact that a major portion of its revenue comes from passengers and not freight. It serves around 500 million passengers annually and this serves as the main source of its revenue. Chennai Central and Trivandrum Central are the most profitable stations of Southern Railway. Keeping this in mind, Southern Railway has upgraded all profitable stations to world class standards.

A major section of Southern Railway consists of meter gauge lines, while the other zones in the Indian railway have broad gauge. Therefore, the main aim of this railway is the conversion of all meter gauge lines into broad gauge lines. Southern Railway is concentrating on improving services and incorporating hi-tech platforms and stations, and better catering stalls. It is also planning to install automated signal system to decrease the number of accidents.

For better administration and improved development and operational reasons, the Indian Railway Board approved the creation of a new railway division with Salem as headquarters in 2005 to improve railway infrastructure, facilities, and to introduce better train services; thereby providing better convenience for passengers.

Southern Railways – Serving the Indian Traveler

Popular rail circuits have been introduced to allow passengers to access major tourist destinations on Friday evening trains. Some of them are the Chennai–Coimbatore-Ooty, Chennai-Salem, Chennai–Trichy– Thanjavur, and Chennai – Kanyakumari.

To meet the urgent travel requirements of passengers who plan their trip instantly, there are Tatkal trains. The Rajdhani Express links the Indian Capital, New Delhi, to most of India’s major cities. It gives people the opportunity to experience the superfast, fully air-conditioned, deluxe trains; which is India at its best. Superfast, intercity trains are known as Shatabdi and they link most major cities in India.

There are many train information portals for passengers for being updated with the latest train news and train timings. Passengers can gather information online from these portals for train availability, train timings, e-ticket and reservation. Sitting at the comfort of their home, passengers can also get their railway reservations online, which is one less thing to worry about during traveling.
