Architecture and Categorization Of a Membrane Switch

Membrane switch is a momentary electrical contact switch. It consists of printed circuit made from a heat stabilized polyester or indium tin oxide (ITO) using a copper, silver or a graphite/silver ink to lend conductivity. The membrane switch is used for activating and deactivating a circuit. Simplest membrane switch architecture consists of four layers. The topmost layer consists of a graphical polyester or polycarbonate layer panel with a printed or embossed button pattern. Second layer comprise of a dome retainer or a spacer. Third layer consisting of printed electric board technology (PET). The final layer constitutes the adhesive backing with a liner.

The four layer architecture makes the membrane switch inherent moisture resistant, easy to clean and sanitize and provides them with an ability to integrate graphics including logos. The membrane switches are easily customizable and hence available at lower costs. All these features help the membrane switch manufacturers to design the switches that can withstand harsh environment with great durability. The membrane switches are commonly used in manufacturing control panels, office equipments like computer keyboards, fitness equipments, vending machines, gas pumps, microwaves, ovens, washers, dryers and certain medical equipments. The membrane switch manufactures manufacture various types of membrane switches including flex circuit membrane switches that are made of polymer thick film membrane with graphic overlays and membrane keypads. Tactile membrane switches are created by inserting stainless steel or polyester domes in membrane switch construction. Domes are supplied with variety of sizes and actuating forces.

Duraswitch membrane switches are new generation products that are designed by combining electo-mechanical and flat panel membrane devices into cost effective and thin switches. Membrane switch keypad is a momentary electrical on/off switch used for activating and deactivating a circuit. Touchscreen membrane switch is a transparent switch with an ability to detect the location of touch within a specific area. Other membrane switch anatomies may be constructed with multiple circuit layers and elaborated design features such as elliptical button embossing etc. More is the complexity of design, more are the number of material layers used for the proper construction and reliable operation of a membrane switch. You can easily locate some good membrane switch manufacturers on the internet and place the order online as well.
