Wonderful Item Design – A Team Effort

The planet of product design is filled with myths and misconceptions. Wonderful product design, so many individuals believe, is created by a design genius. She wakes up in the night with THE IDEA which will change humankind forever. Without loosing any time she sits down at her desk and works tirelessly for the next 72 hrs, neither eating nor drinking until one of the a lot of complications that plagues humankind is solved.
Ok, we are exaggerating a little bit but we think you get the point.
Superb items aren’t designed that way. Nothing may be further from the truth.
In real life, superb item design is teamwork. Designers, engineers and our customers work together to create a fantastic, brilliant, stunning item.
And it is not an simple objective. Everyone involved in the procedure has a different viewpoint on how the item need to be.
Take the designer: She wants to achieve the most pleasing and stimulating product. An item of long lasting influence. Designers, especially our designers at DETEKT, are not satisfied quickly. They want a 150% great merchandise. Anything else isn’t acceptable. An excellent looking product, easy to use with a fantastic user experience. If it doesn’t meet all these criteria – forget it!
Then there is the engineer: His task is to take the conceptual design of the product and make it simple to manufacture. So for an engineer questions like “what material are we going to use”, “can we produce the shapes and forms easily”, “how challenging will the tooling process be” are most essential . And, certainly, “can the merchandise be manufactured at your amount point”.
Needless to say that designers and engineers from time to time clash.
If you let the designer get her way, you might end up with an item that is visually stunning but too hard or too pricey to manufacture.
An engineer will always go for the safe option. That is superb for manufacturing but you’ll loose out on an innovative and insanely superb design.
And after that there’s the customer naturally. Our clients carry the most essential weight in the product development process. In the end, we are right here to design and engineer a stunning, breath taking item that blows everybody away.
Yet from a customers perspective it’s crucial that the item could possibly be sold. That means it demands to be manufactured at a certain expense point.
So how do you get these different views together? Yep, by working together. Needless to say, that there are long discussions in each project meeting.
Together with our designers, engineers and customers we work on identifying the key properties of a merchandise and will design and engineer a product that’s just awesome.
So good design isn’t an one-man (or one woman) show. It’s a collaborative effort by designers, engineers and customers working together to produce some thing unique.
We at DETEKT are proud to be part of this process.
