THE POPULARITY OF MOBILE PHONES
There are so many career options available to young people these days but the most popular fields tend to be anything connected to computers or mobile phones. When we were at the stage of deciding which options to take for our further studies, most children were encouraged to go into the field of medicine, law or engineering, not only by parents but also by teachers and careers’ advisors. The brave few were strong enough to rebel against the popular choices and decided to go into areas such as advertising, journalism and teaching, with the even braver students following their hearts and entering the music, catering or artistic industries.
Nowadays, if you ask a child what he/she wants to be when they grow up, you will hear replies such as software programmer or computer designer or else they wish to do mobile website design and mobile website development. If we had said that we wish to be a mobile website builder, our teachers would probably have called our parents in to have one of THOSE talks! However in these new, and let’s face it, confusing times, we need to realise that education, careers and job opportunities rely very much on our ability to understand computers and terms such as website traffic, search engines, apps and mobile websites.
The popularity of mobile phone websites is increasing almost daily due to the convenience factor and the way that our lifestyles have changed in the past few years. Fifteen years ago, when mobile phones first started to become popular, people were still impressed and excited when they were given a mobile phone as a gift and the proud owner would show it off to all his friends. These phones were so simple and bulky that today’s children laugh at seeing one, but for us they were cool and although they were mainly just to make and receive calls, we all still wanted one, though they were expensive. Now they are found in the hands of most people.
So many children have mobile phones now that the novelty has worn off and you can see even young school children carrying mobiles along with their school bags and lunch boxes. While we used to play outdoor games in our break times, now kids sit hunched over their hand sets, often using mobile websites to play games, stay in touch with friends or just texting the person sat next to them, instead of talking.
Even going out on social visits means that you will see people spending more time talking on their phones than communicating with each other and this is true whether you are in somebody’s house, enjoying a nice meal in a restaurant or even out sightseeing. I have seen couples sat at the same table and each of them are having conversations on their phones with other people, and not even regarding business matters, which at least could possibly be excused on the pretext thatwork comes before pleasure.
