Some Good Australian Scenic Drives
For the self drive holiday maker Australia has more than just straight highways. Here’s a sample of what the Country has to offer.
Bloomfield Trail:
You’ll need a 4WD for this drive, but it’s well worth it. running from the town of Cape Tribulation to Cooktown, it meanders through the tropical rainforests of Queensland, where the coastlines are majestic and the wildlife interesting and quirky. Fuel is pretty expensive in this area of Australia and the route is a reasonable size – so it’s a handy little number if you’re touching down at Cairns Airport.
Pacific Coast:
If you’re flying in to Sydney International or Brisbane International then the Pacific Coast drive really is a must do. Meandering along the East Coast between the two cities, it takes in the majestic coastline of the Pacific and the picturesque ocean views. A popular trail for surfers and all kinds of tourists, it runs alongside countless beautiful bays, beaches and seaside villages. Another handy thing about this route is that it’s an acceptable length, so you won’t end up paying lots for petrol!
Fraser Island:
This is another 4WD job, but it’s a great drive, and a must if you are into camping. Head off road to the sandy beaches and tropical forestry of this incredible island. Located just off the coast of Hervey Bay in Queensland, it’s an once in a lifetime off road experience for the adventurer behind the wheel. Again fuel is pretty cheap in Queensland so you can save a few bucks here!
Mereenie Trail:
For a true outback experience, drive Northern Territory’s Mereenie Loop Road. The road links Alice Springs, the hub of Australia’s red centre, with the remote desert lodges of Glen Helen, Kings Canyon and Ayers Rock. The route through this dramatic landscape covers approximately 700 miles and should be experienced over three to five days to explore the many walks, side trips, impressive gorges and picture perfect swimming holes.
I like nothing more than a good old fashioned driving holiday. Add some of these great drives to your Cairns Holiday.
