Agra Tourist Attractions – Tomb of I’timād-ud-Daulah

Mirza Beg’s children served as the mothers, children, wives and even generals in the ranks of the Mughal Empire. He was a person of Persian origin and had immigrated to India during the Mughal rule. His mausoleum is one of the inspirations for the architectural style, in which the Taj Mahal was built. It has been built with white marble imported from Persia, with various designs on the pillars and the walls. There are many verses of the Quran, inscribed on the walls of the tomb. Because of its striking similarity with the Taj Mahal in terms of architectural style and design, people often refer to it as the ‘Baby Taj’.
It is situated on the banks of the Yamuna River and is built on a huge area, which covers about 23 sq. meters. The pillars and the walls are adorned with designs out of precious stones such as jasper, cornelian, topaz, lapis lazuli and onyx. Many of the relatives of Mirza Beg, along with his wife, have also been buried inside this mausoleum. It is a beautiful structure, which looks pristine due to its white color, which is derived from the marbles used in constructing it. There is a beautiful gateway made of red sandstone (obtained from Rajasthan) that serves as the entrance to this magical place. The tomb also consists of many hexagonal towers in each corner, built out of large blocks of stones. One can also get a beautiful view of the River Yamuna from the tomb.
