While the tradition of pearls and weddings continues today, the tradition of pearl engagement rings is less common, and that’s a shame because pearl rings offer a brilliant alternative to the more usual choice. Perhaps ‘diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ but pearls can be a fiancé’s companion for life.

It may be that the idea of a pearl ring as a token of engagement is due for a revival. We live in an age which likes to do its own thing, as well as looking back to past traditions to revive. Perhaps we need a high profile engagement to kick start the tradition and encourage others to follow suit. It might take pop royalty or even near royalty [Pippa Middleton anyone?] to make pearl rings de rigueur again for engagements but it shouldn’t stop a wannabe bride who loves their stylish elegance from choosing one.
