Alex von Furstenberg Brings Back The Smile in Children’s Faces
Cleft lip and cleft palate is a congenital deformity that is caused by abnormal facial development during pregnancy. A cleft is the non-fusion of the body’s natural structure which occurs before birth and results to the fissure or gap. This deformity can be treated soon after the child was born or in his early childhood through a surgery. Both cleft lip and cleft palate occur at an approximate of 1 per 500 to 700 births in the world. Each year, there are about 200,000 children born with such congenital deformity.
Realizing that the number of children being born with such deformity has risen in the past years, businessman and philanthropist Alex Von Furstenberg has shown his support to an organization that does surgery for cleft lip and cleft palate. This organization is Operation Smile. The group founded in 1982 by Dr. William Magee Jr. provides safe, effective and free repair surgery for children that were born unfortunately with such deformity. Operation Smile does not only do its medical missions in America but also in other parts of the world. At least 60 countries have benefited from the free surgeries and medical missions. This group does not only help in repairing the deformity but also in raising the awareness for this one so that the children would be healed, regardless of the financial standing, in the future.
Ranger Global Advisors, LLC Chief Investment Officer Alex Von Furstenberg has given a lot of monetary support for this organization. He knows that these children are the future of the world and he wants them to live a better life without any restrictions. According to the 40-year-old von Furstenberg, by treating the deformities, these children would be able to study well since they would not be teased by other people. This is something that he does not want the children to suffer.
Alex Von Furstenberg’s rendered help for Operation Smile is just one of the so many philanthropic organizations that he supports. The number of the organizations might even reach a hundred which shows how good of a person von Furstenberg is. The sectors in the society where he helps are community building, human rights, education, arts, environment, and health. Aside from his own philanthropic work, von Furstenberg also takes part in his family’s foundation, The Diller – von Furstenberg Family Foundation. He serves here as a director and as a secretary. Childcare is one of the sectors it helps.
