This art is called as bagh (garden of flowers), when due to heavy embroidery, every inch of the cloth is covered with flowers resembling a garden design and thereby making the cloth entirely invisible.

History of Phulkari art:
Phulkari art has been mentioned in several ancient scriptures including Vedas, Mahabharata and Guru Granth Sahib. But, the credit of starting this art goes to the Bebe Nanaki, the sister of first Sikh Guru Nanak Dev. She embellished a rumal with Phulkari art using embroidered work about 1500 AD. The Sikh ladies of Punjab started to use it for the embellishment of odhini (head cloth) and shawls. For creating this art, the multicolored silk thread is used. The darn stitching is done on the reverse side of coarse cotton using usually thin needles. The Phulkari work has gained popularity in Punjab on different occasions such as festivals, wedding, religious ceremonies etc.
