Increasing number of women in the workforce?
The women in work force started from the World War II when there was a labor shortage at that time. From the period 1940 to 1945, the female labor force has grown by about 50 percent and the employment in women also has increased by 62 percent. The ancient cultural inhibitions were altered eventually and the middle class women started to work.
The beginning and continuation of periodical feminist movements have emphasized on the liberation of women from the knots of social evils and given them equal rights. The feminist by name Betty Friedan and other similar women intended to stop the domestic slavery and tried to demolish the discrimination of women in many societies.
Women started to work also because the family needed further support in the financial aspect. The government also passed regulations and made some amendments regarding the equal rights for women in the year 1972. The other lawful Acts in this regard that were put forward are Equal pay Act of 1963, Civil rights Act of 1964, and presidential executive order in 1967.
The demand for people in manufacturing sector has reduced compared to the service sector. The people required to be appointed in the service sector kept on rising and this led to the demand for the women workers. Gradually women started to have accessibility to higher education. Approximately, 120, 796 college degrees were possessed by the women during the period of 1949-1950. But, by the year 2008-2009 about 1,849,200 college degrees were earned.
As more women entered the work force there was increase in the purchasing power of them, drastic improvements in business, and increase in gross domestic product and women entrepreneurs. The working women slowly are spending their time very less with their children. The daily stress for women increased as they needed to satisfy multiple roles. They cannot provide child care with quality. The women at work might also influence the children’s and husband’s life styles.
