Is home school Physical Education necessary?
My home schooled son attended a “Roomies” activity in college. I am not totally certain, yet I believe a boys dorm room as well as a girls dorm room head out with each other for an organized activity. Alex’s group went ice skating, out to “bubble tea” (imagine college-age version of Starbuck’s) and next (as a group) to the park to take a look at the city lights.
Let me just point out, to begin with, that my son is having a GREAT DEAL of fun at college! What a total blast! Can I have some good, clean fun as well?
But we ended up talking about ice skating, and he claimed it was quite fun! It reminded me of our first week with home schooling. The boys were in 3rd and 5th grade when we began our journey. Our first week of school (third day of homeschooling, really! )#) we went with a homeschool group to the “homeschool skate” for roller skating. We went into the Skate Deck, and when I looked at the floor, I observed a little child fall quite hard. Instantly, teens emerged from the woodwork! A entire group of teenagers skated up to the youngster, picked him up, and skated with him to his mother at the side.
I was surprised! I had never thought that it was possible for teens to behave in this kind and dependable way! It was surprising! I recall going home and sharing with my husband, “we have definitely made the RIGHT choice to home school! When home schoolers can bring up teens to behave like that, then homeschooling is exactly what we ought to be doing! ” I had been close to plenty of teenagers, and this was a special display of character, and it certainly impacted us.
We continued with our regular excursions to the Skate Deck for PE. I had observed the PE class in public school for years. They played games, but generally what I heard from my children was about how long they were forced to wait in line during class. In comparison, our home school PE class included one entire hour (or was it two? )#) of skating. Actual physical exercise. My children learned a physical skill that they could use all through their lives. Here we are with college age students, and they can have fun with “Roomies” activities since our home school PE class taught skating rather than waiting around in line! Our PE may not have included some things, however my boys do know how to roller skate, bowl, swim, ski, and play soccer.
