Little Mix in Christmas Number One Military Battle
As Little Mix are crowned X Factor winners of 2011, the focus has quickly turned to their longevity as a girl band and the all-important Christmas number one. In previous years it has become predictable that the X Factor winner will hit the Christmas top spot; that was until Rage Against the Machine started a Facebook campaign in 2009 to prevent the winner from attaining that predictable number one.
The campaign saw over half a million Brits back the US band, resulting in the 2009 X Factor winner Joe McElderry losing out by a small margin. Such campaign may only gain gravitas through building strong Media Relations, in this instance two individuals employed New Media PR skills on Facebook to gain the backing of fellow users; this was the perfect platform to position such a campaign.
This year there have been a number of artists tipped to top the festive chart, including the Military Wives Choir, Nirvana, Alex Day, Lou Monte, Stacey Solomon, the cast of The Only Way is Essex and of course, Little Mix. Initial thoughts were that the tie would be between Little Mix and the Military Wives Choir; this was until Little Mix released their debut single a week early. Despite shooting to number one with their cover of Damien Rice’s Cannonball, the girl band only sold 210,000 copies, which is considerably lower than previous X Factor winners. These sales may be a reflection of the shows lower than normal viewing figures and the closure of many music retailers during 2011.
At such a crucial time, it would benefit Little Mix to have the backing of a London based PR Agency to execute Effective Public Relations, ideally this would be a Celebrity PR team who know and understand the industry. Since Little Mix’s fan base has a large online presence and many are social media enthusiasts, PR Consultants with experience in Digital PR would heighten the group’s online visibility and create a buzz around the new girl band.
It is imperative that the selected Publicity Agent maintains the group’s media presence and doesn’t allow them to fade into the background, which has notoriously happened to other X Factor winners. This may explain why doting fans of the girl group were unhappy when they were crowned winners, as many who come second in the competition enjoy much more success; it is imperative for Little Mix to beat the battle of the girl band curse.
Let’s hope they can enjoy the success of girl bands such as The Spice Girls!
