Chottanikkara – A Religious Trip
Chottanikkara is a picturesque village located on the outskirts of Kochi. It is renowned as an important religious destination in central Kerala. It is an attractive small town in the district of Eranakulam, offering tranquility and solitude for pilgrims. The ancient Chottanikkara Bhagavathi temple is the prime attraction of this town. Chottanikkara is the peeth of Rajarajeswari Devi, a calm form of Goddess Durga. The Navaratri festival during October and November is also a popular time to visit.
The Chottanikkara Temple is a famous temple of the Hindu mother goddess Bhagawati. It is one of the most popular temples in the state and in terms of temple architecture, this temple stands out to be an ultimate testament for the ancient vishwakarma sthapathis (wooden sculpture) in sculpting this temple along with Sabarimala.
Bhagawati is one of the most popular deities in the area, Chottanikkara Devi is worshipped at the temple, in three different forms: as Saraswati in the morning, draped in white; as Lakshmi at noon, draped in crimson; and as Durga in the evening, decked in blue. Lord Shiva is also worshiped at the temple. Pilgrimage to Chottanikkara is believed to bestow a lifetime blessings for those pilgrims visiting the temple for twelve days consecutively.
People suffering from mental illnesses commonly visit the temple, as Bhagawati is thought to cure her devotees. Tourists should not miss the ‘Guruthi Pooja’ in the ‘Keezhkkaavu’ temple at Chottanikkara. This is a ritual done at late evening to invoke the goddess. ‘Chottanikara Makam thozhal’ is the famous religious festival in the temple.
Tourists coming to Chottanikkara are lucky because the temple is close to Eranakulam and so they can also visit its many nearby attractions. The village itself is nestled amid lush green vegetation and breezy coconut palms lined along the sides of the road.
There are many other attractions in close proximity to Chottanikkara like the Thrupunithura hill palace, the Travancore Fertilizers and Mattancheri harbor attract many travelers to the city. Some of the popular temples like Vaikam Mahadeva temple and Eranakulathappan temple are nearby.
