Simon Cowell is probably one of the most famous faces in the world, he shot to fame when he appeared as a judge on the first series of the hugely successful Pop Idol, he then went to America for American Idol and returned back to the UK after the second season of Pop Idol to launch the X Factor, he is probably the most famous judge in the world and also appears as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent.
Simon Cowell was born in Brighton, England on October 7, 1959 to Eric Philip Cowell and Julie Brett. He spent his childhood in Elstree, Hertfordshire under the watchful eye of his father, a music industry executive and his mother, a former professional ballet dancer. His parents associations with the entertainment world helped shape Cowell’s interests in music and art.
In 1984 Cowel and Burton met Pete Waterman. Mike Stock, Matt Aitkin and Pete Waterman formed the song writing and record producing trio “Stock Aitkin Waterman” (SAW). They produced several hits for Fanfare. Cowel signed up with S-Records. Later he set up another label “Syco Music” which became part of Columbia records and Sony BMG Music entertainer.
Cowell helped build the success of S-Records through his work with BMG and helped launch the careers of well-known stars such as Sonia Evans, Five, and Westlife. In 2002 he started his own label under the name Syco Records which eventually became part of the Sony BMG Music Entertainment group of labels. Syco has signed deals for contestants from America’s Got Talent and The X Factor.
As a judge, Cowell is known for his blunt and often controversial criticisms, insults and wisecracks about contestants and their abilities. He is also known for combining activities in the television and music industries, having promoted singles and records for various artists, including television personalities. He was most recently featured on the seventh series of The X Factor and the fifth series of Britain’s Got Talent. In September 2011, he will feature as a judge on the first season of the American version of The X Factor.
