How To Create Raggedy Anne Doll Wigs
Ever wondered how people go about making Raggedy Ann costumes? Each October, hundreds, if not thousands of individuals turn up in neighborhoods and holiday parties across the U.S. dressed as their favorite little red head. From the candy cane socks to the white apron and blue dress, the costume seems easy enough to put together. But when it really comes down to it, it’s the red yarn hair that makes this outfit blossom. Creating yarn wigs is a fairly quick and easy project that takes little more than an hour to complete. This is mainly due to the fact that these particular wigs do not require dye or glue to construct. In this article, we will walk you through the process involved in creating Raggedy Ann wigs.
Supplies
Tapestry Needle
Chalk
Red Knitted Cap
Red Yarn
Cardboard
Scissors
Tape Measure
Step 1 – Measure out a piece of cardboard and cut it 2ft long x 1ft wide. This will ensure that the yarn used in the wig is of uniform length.
Step 2 – Now wrap the yarn lengthwise around the cardboard about 15 – 20 times. A small length of yarn should then be slid between the cardboard and yarn and moved up to the top edge of the rectangle. Knot your smaller yarn piece tightly around the top side of the wrapped yarn and remove the wrapped yarn from the cardboard.
Step 3 – Step 2 should be repeated roughly 10 times until you have enough yarn hanks to fill out the wig.
Step 4 – Find your knitted cap and place it on a flat surface. Now draw a single straight line down the middle of the cap from back to front.
Step 5 – Gather your yarn hanks and begin attaching them to the cap. Begin about an inch from the brim’s front, placing the initial yarn hank to the cap with the knotted yard lined up to the chalk line. Make sure that the yarn strands are hanging down on each side of the cap. Loop your tapestry needle equipped with yarn through the strand that is knotted until a point where the hank is secure. For added security, knot the hank on the cap’s underside.
Step 6 – Keep attaching the hanks of yarn to the cap in the same manner until the line of chalk is no longer visible.
Step 7 – Grab a model and place the finished wig on their head. Take a soft brush and run it through the yarn until your fingers are able to move through it freely before cutting the strands to a shoulder length all the way around. To create the bangs, situate some of the yarn from the front of the wig in front of the face and trim it to the correct length.
And there you have it! Now go out and purchase some red makeup, blue dress, and those adorable red & white stockings!
