Italian Ensigns & Flagpoles
The flag of Italy is flown from Italian flagpoles throughout the Italian territory. This beautiful tricolor resembles certain other national flags. This national standard was adopted back in 1948, some three years following the end of World War 2. The three vertical bands each have the same width, but feature different colors. The vertical band on the left displays the color green, the one in the middle is white, and the vertical stripe on the right is red.
Italy has been in the news recently because of their debt related problems. They are not the only country in Europe with debt issues. It seems that the whole of the European Union is struggling with cash flow and such financial issues. Greece especially seems to be in the worst condition. Ireland, Portugal and Spain also seem to struggling financially at this time, and like have been for a while.
Most folks in and outside of Italy have heard of Rome, the capital city of Italy. Rome was considered the political center when the Roman Empire was still organizes, indeed in existence. Following the end of the Roman Empire, Italy was divided into a number of different kingdoms, but was again unified in the 19th century. Today’s Italy is a democratic republic, like most other countries in Europe.
Some other interesting dates in Italian history. Before 1861 Italy consisted of several separate states, including the Papal States. In 1796 Napoleon invaded Italy. In 1805 the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy was organized. Some ten years later, Napoleon was defeated. In 1848 the nationalists gained momentum. In 1861 the Kingdom of Italy under the House of Savoy was organized. The formation of the Vatican City State occurred in 1929. And, in 1946 the republic of Italy was organized.
Following the years of World War 1, Italy experienced some turbulence, which led to turmoil and anarchy. The latter being inspired by the Russian Revolution. A certain man by the name of Benito Mussolini led the National Fascist Party, which was endorsed by the liberal establishment. Back in ’22, this party attempted a coup, which was in fact supported by king Victor Emmanuel 3. During the then following years, Benito started banning political parties and created a dictatorship, which he maintained till 1943. It was during this year that the allies invaded Italy.
