Important Tips for Phishing Protection

Today in the internet age, everything is possible at the click of a button. From booking tickets to paying off bills, everything is done with the help of technology. However, as we depend heavily on technology, we become more vulnerable to hacker attacks. Today’s cybercriminals are highly sophisticated who leave no stone unturned to con people. They use the most modern technology to put their strategies into action.

As per latest studies on cybercrime, cybercriminals are increasingly using clever social engineering tactics to entice people. They get what they want by playing with the feelings and emotions of the people. They exploit human weaknesses by playing on their greed, pride and authority. As human beings are helpful by nature, it more or less makes things easy for the criminals.  In most cases, they approach people with some kind of urgent problem requiring instant reaction.  People react without thinking and thereby get tricked in the process.

For the past few years, there has been substantive increase in cybercrime, malware and phishing attacks. Phishing refers to the use of SPAM, fake websites, emails and instant messages to deceive people in revealing their most confidential details such as bank account passwords, credit card numbers, user names and so on. Companies and enterprises use anti-phishing tools that help to detect the phishing content in websites and emails and thereby prevent the phishers from accessing their highly sensitive internal data.

However, whatever precautions companies might take, it essential comes down to the employees to take sensible precautions and proactive steps so that they can avoid becoming phish baits. The following are some important tips to ensure phishing protection.

* Never pay attention to any email messages that asks you to take immediate action or threatens you with dire consequences, if left unnoticed.

* Phishing mails often addresses the target as “Dear Customer” or “Dear Sir/Madam”  instead of by name.

* Never communicate any sensitive information through emails, as emails are the least secure form of communication.

* Never click on the link provided in a suspicious phishing email. You either type the url in a different browser or contact the bank or company directly.

* Before providing any sensitive information make sure that the site is authentic and secure by ensuring that the site URL starts with https:// instead of http://. Apart from that, for secure sites a locked padlock appears on the lower side of the browser window and not on the page.
