Museums in Alicante

Provincial Archaeology Museum:

Archaeology Museum was constructed in the year 1932 in the basement of a building, which was at time called Provincial Council Building. Initially, the findings from different archaeological places were kept in this museum, including the El Campello site, Torremanzanas site and the sites of Alicante city. Later, the museum was transferred to the wonderful installations in San Juan Dios Hospital, which is an ancient hospital. This museum is known to be the classical museum in Spain for its style and layouts. It contains the work belonging to different civilizations, starting from Paleolithic age to the modern day art and archaeology. You will find many treasures in this museum belonging to Roman, Muslim and Iberian era, including variety and exclusive display of ceramics, utensils and the reminiscent of popular Lady of Elche.

Garrigos Wells:

Garrigos Wells are the set of big water wells with a capacity of eight hundred seven thousand liters of water. These wells are located in Benacantil Mountain and have old ancient history. According to historical sources, these wells were unearthed during the Muslim rule. Evidence shows that these wells were present in the 16th century and then in the 19th century these wells were re-discovered by Antonio Lopez. The objective behind the construction of these well was to store the rainwater to supply it to the town. There are some pieces of pottery present inside the wells belonging to the ancient times.

Capa Collection:

Capa Collection is in an open- air area and the halls of the Santa Barbara Castle, from where you can overlook the Alicante city. This is known to be the biggest collection of contemporary sculptures in the whole world, belonging to the 19th and the 20th century. This collection was given to the city by Professor Capa, who collected these sculptures and put them for display in 1998. This collection contains 700 pieces of different works and among this number, 250 holdings are permanent. You will find a variety of holdings from many great artists like Blay, Perez, Benlliure, Capuz and many others.

Nativity Museum:

Nativity Museum is situated in a traditional house, which is located in Old Quarter and it was built during the first half of 19th century. It contains water well. The museum has scenes which display the life of Christ, developed by some of the best nativity scenes creating artists of Spain. This museum also contains variety of nativity scenes belonging to different countries of the world.
