Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine – New 2009 Model V3 Review
Rancilio Silvia V3
There is an account that Rancilio has not seen fit to end production of the Silvia. Plainly stated, it is broadly approved as one of the home espresso machines on the market.
For years this is an espresso machine folk buy because it is in favor and there is an excessive online community for aid and the parts are easy to get in case of any replacement. Granted that you’re prepared to hand over the cheaper stuff behind to purchase a higher quality espresso maker, this should be the one.
What does the Rancilio Silvia got?
It still has the overruling brass boiler and tenacious pump that have made the Silvia stand head and shoulders on top of the competition.
New improvement and upgrades for the Rancilio Silvia V3 contain: a commercial grade, fully articulating steam wand with 1-hole tip for refined milk frothing, a new ergonomic grip for the metal steam wand to make it easier to open and close, a new ergonomic handle for the already heavy-duty porta-filter.
Yes, it’s a heavy mother, away the costless shipping. But it also has its good looks that can stand proud in each and every kitchen. The innermost of the machine is built very well, marine brass boiler with a 1Kw heater bring her up to temperature swift (>10 seconds), and a 3 way solenoid to stop spit back.
It looks like the only changes between V2 and V3 are cosmetic – brew group handle, drip tray design and the steam knob. Also, It is good that they have improved the design of this, since on V2 the tray had some very sharp edges and looked like it came out of a fabrication shop without the finishing touches.
As an arbitrary upgrade you can change the thermocouple with a PID from Auber Instruments (expensive, not necessary, but fun and it gives more uniformity in taste), which allows better temperature control, extraction timer and pre-infusion. if you can follow instructions, look at pictures and if you have an hour or 2-3 to spare on a rainy sunday afternoon, you can handle this.
Any large (or small) minors?
But there’s also a modest learning curve involved in this beast and takes exercise to get things right. As with any potential upgrade in a passion should.
It seems to be a bit inflexible as to the amount of grounds to use, and the tamping needs to be firm or it sputters. On occasion it can be wonky getting the portafilter in right. But these are minors that should become mode over time.
Also, there is a bit of annual maintenance that needs to be brought up. First, The group head or porta filter gasket should be replaced every 12-18 months, but this is painless and fast.
Second, the thermocouple/thermostatic wire will desire replacement at intervals, which is also quick and untroublesome.
You might want to think of ordering another tamper (58mm) though, because the one Rancilio includes isn’t of a very high quality and simply too small. All you need to make professional espresso’s is a consistent bean grinder (use Silvia’s brother Rocky), a good 58mm tamper, clean water, and fresh quality complete beans to be in coffee kingdom quickly.
