Safety Tips when using Mobile Steps
Not everyone is always tall enough to get the job done. When a ladder or a step is not to hand and won’t get the job done, what other tools or options do you have? And you need safe options, since you are in a work environment or a factory where safety of everyone is the most important consideration. Have you heard about mobile steps? These steps are meant to be moved around to different locations as needed and provide a safe and durable way to reach high spaces.
The biggest thing to worry about when using mobile steps is the surface of the floor. Is there any moisture that could make it slippery? Many types of mobile steps will have legs that have durable rubber stops to prevent slipping on the bottom, but in the case of a wet surface, all bets are off. If there is a wet surface and you need to use mobile steps in that area to reach something, make sure the surface is flat or else wait until it is dried off.
Mobile steps need to be purchased in sizes that work for you. One reason why falls occur is because the steps or ladder just isn’t tall enough, so the person extends themselves over the ladder and then loses their balance and falls. Getting a taller ladder or getting mobile steps in the right size could have prevented the whole incident from happening. Mobile steps come in a variety of heights, so don’t worry about getting one at a lower price just to save money. Get an adequate size and pay the money so you can be safe and any employees can also remain safe.
Keep the mobile steps in an area where they will be used properly. Mobile steps allow people to reach taller items, but are those items that should be pulled off of a shelf by a person? Sometimes items are heavy and require a fork truck to lift them or get them down, not a human. Other items on a shelf could be chemical and require the use of proper tools or safety equipment to remove. If you don’t want people getting things from a restricted area, then it might be best to keep the mobile steps away so they aren’t tempted to do so anyway.
The mobile steps you purchase and use often should be kept in good repair. If they are heavily used, make sure the treads are still in solid shape. The treads could wear and make for a slippery step, so get them replaced the first they show wear. The same goes for the legs and the steps themselves. Make sure they are secure and in working order after several months or even a year of use. If the steps become uneven or the mobile steps unit doesn’t seem secure, then replace it and buy new. Saving money is not a replacement for having safe equipment for employees or others to use in your business.
When using mobile steps there are a number of safety aspects to consider.
