I could see that in a world of sparkling bags overflowing with toys, like those pictured in the Styles section, a child might worry that her party favor can’t compete. That is where these things can begin to matter. Have any of your children begun to draw comparisons, and how have you handled it? Are the “goody bags” over-the-top where you come from, and do you care? Do your children notice the difference?
Once, they were called party favors, and they were small. A rainbow window sticker. A tiny plastic horse off of a decorated birthday cake. When I was of birthday party age, “paint pens” were new, and my mother once bought small plastic boxes, wrote a child’s name on each one, and filled them with Sour Balls. At the time, that was “big.”
In some circles, things seem to have changed dramatically. Writing “Tempest in a Goody Bag” for the Styles section today, Alexandra Zissu found parents who’d offered watches and art sets, a store with a “goody bag bar” (average amount spent per child: $15) and heard of tennis rackets, cooking kits, michaelkorsgoldwatches and American Girl Dolls given, not as birthday gifts, but as favors for guests.
