Car rental – Optimize the use of gas when you rent a car
If you have a tight budget, you can still find a suitable car rental model. After all we are talking about financing a car (or “finansiering bil” as the Danish call it), so here are some tips to optimize gas in your car (own or rent):
- Start the engine of your car without stepping on the accelerator, it is not necessary.
- Begin driving immediately after starting the engine, it stands with the engine consumes gasoline unnecessarily.
- If you rent a car or other vehicle with a diesel engine, wait a few seconds before starting the march. If you stop more than 60 seconds, turn off the engine.
- Keep the car’s speed as uniform as possible, avoid braking, acceleration and gear changes unnecessary, saving energy.
- To slow the car, lift off the throttle and let the vehicle roll the gear.
- If needed, brake smoothly the car with the brake pedal, slowing as late as possible.
Speed
Whenever the car rental vehicle exceeds the speed and space permit, stop the car without reducing the speed too fast. Use first gear only at the beginning and change the order to the second speed for two seconds or six meters later. Plan your route and choose the road that may be less congested.
Avoid overloading the car caused by excess weight (people or objects). The use of the roof, empty or not, increases fuel consumption by 2 to 35 percent. It is preferable to remove it if not in use. The use of air conditioning to 20% increases fuel consumption, if not need, rent a car without air and save on rent and gasoline! Even without air conditioning the car rental, should not bring the windows wide open while driving, open them just a little.
More Gasoline facts
When you rent, you get the car with a full tank, ask what type of gasoline they have used to go for the same fuel, this will help you save money. Check periodically the gasoline consumption. If the data varies, there may be a fault in the vehicle, if applicable give notice to the car rental company. Do not use the car for very short journeys, can consume 20 liters per 100 km in small urban tours, and rent a car when you need to go on the road or take very long journeys. If you are unhappy with the company car (or “firmabil” as the Danish term goes) you can always return it.
Be aware that you have choices to move short distances, use public transportation, bike or walk, for short distances. If you need to move on longer trips, consider renting a strong model.
A little history
Believe it or not, the first time anyone could rent a car in an airport was in 1946. Warren Avis opened the first car rental shop at the airport from the city of Detroit and only had 3 cars for rent. In 1916 Joe Saunders founded a company dedicated to rent a Model T Ford, the only car he had. Saunders was engaged in renting the car salesmen who traveled a lot. They say their first customer was a salesman who urged him any means of transport to get to a rendezvous.
