Buying something unique for your dad
It might seem a little early to be thinking about what to get your dad for father’s day when mother’s day is still yet to arrive, but that’s the point. People tend to think of their fathers as being relatively easy going about presents compared to their mothers; after all, who hasn’t had the “you don’t need to buy anything for me” talk from their dads, especially when a somewhat superfluous holiday like father’s day comes around? But this makes it easy to think of the holiday for dads as being a lot less important.
That is not to say there aren’t some mother’s day standards; things like flowers and chocolates are pretty much mainstays around this time of year, as they are fairly inexpensive, and have the reputation of being nice, thoughtful gifts. There are no such luxuries on father’s day; there is not a general consensus on what to get dads in the same vein. In the past I have always bought my dad a few bottles of beer, since I know he will get some use out of them, but it has gotten to the stage where every year I find something really nice and different for my mother, and as it gets round to father’s day I don’t have anything in mind and get stuck buying beer again.
This year the search has begun earlier, and it has become important to find something more unusual. Clothes have become a mainstay for mothers as well, but it can seem less appropriate somehow, or rather less exciting, to buy an article of clothing for your dad. Many dads like something a bit less practical, and entertainment can be a good start. Musically inclined fathers would probably appreciate a CD for example, whereas for many a DVD would go down a treat.
Again, though, something more unusual can be the answer. Many dads like gadgets; sometimes this can mean the latest technology, but it doesn’t always have to. There are a wide variety of simple objects that can make everyday life a bit easier or a little more fun, that are relatively inexpensive and would make perfect father’s day gifts.
We also think of little things for the house as being the province of mothers more than fathers, but this is not necessarily the case. From interesting mugs, to tools and things for the study, there are plenty of unusual things you can get for your father to avoid getting more of the same.
It is getting to the time of year when you need to start thinking of fathers day gift ideas, and unusual gifts for men could be a good starting point to avoid getting the same old same old.
