The correct way to deal with a flat battery

After having just attended a very important job interview, upon return to my car I discovered I had a flat tire(in Denmark it’s called Fladt dæk på din bil). Now that was easily fixable, but in the end it turned out that wasn’t the only problem with my car. I had a dead battery too!I arrived early as a precautionary measure, to ensure I could find the place in plenty of time and that I was first to show up. I always like to be the first name in the sign in book. I must have been so focused on the interview, I forgot to turn off my head lights and now they are dim and the battery is flat. It has a little charge but not enough to start the cold engine.

I am glad I did not decide to park in the office car park, as they would all be able to see me struggling with my car. I opted for the local municipal car park that is a park and display. I have a couple of options open to me so I need to decide which the best is, and quickest as I should be in work at the moment!

I can either get help, to bump start the car or I can get a jump start and lastly remove the dead battery (those are called dødt batteri på bilen in Denmark) and take it away and charge it. I would need a few people to all offer their help at once, if I wish to do the easiest way and bump start the car. It is by far the quickest, as all I would need to do is have them push, whilst I select second gear with the ignition on and after a couple of feet I would be on my way. The problem with this choice is I chose a rather remote car park, so to get two or three people all at once is not going to happen any time soon.

I have no choice but to call my road side assistance company. I have my exact position on my satellite navigation system, so they should be able to find me without any problems. I contacted them and they confirmed they would be out to help me with my flat battery, in less than fifteen minutes, as a patrol guy has just finished a job in the next street. Well less than five minutes later and having agreed to pay his ticket for parking, he entered the car park and hooked up his jump leads. This option will see his battery supply my flat battery with the cranking voltage to re-start my car.

As soon as my engine was running he disconnected his jump leads and allowed my flat battery time to charge. He did a couple of diagnostic checks to ensure my battery was being charged and I was on my way, once I had sorted out the paper work and paid just over seven quid for the pleasure of parking in such a remote place.

I returned to work and ensured I turned everything off as I do not want a repeat of this morning’s flat battery.
