Changing the Concept of Pest Control: Environmentally Friendly Exterminators

If you are like most people, when you think of exterminators doing their work in and around the buildings of Toronto, you probably imagine cans of chemically-laden insecticides being sprayed through a long tube in order to get rid of roaches, ants, bed bugs, or other undesirables. You might even be able to imagine that distinctive bug-spray smell that seems to accompany exterminators wherever they go. Such mental images are understandable, for exterminators have long utilized such chemical pesticides to treat for pests.

However, there is a new breed of exterminators coming on the scene in Toronto and throughout North America who, though they sometimes still use pesticides in a judicious manner, are working to become eco-friendly exterminators insofar as they can. In fact, the movement has become so widespread that the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) in the United States recently recognized four organizations in that state for reducing pesticide use.

One of the groups, SunWest Fruit Company based in Fresno County, uses a variety of state-of-the-art integrated pest management (IPM) techniques in order to control pests. According to the DPR, SunWest grew the first citrus and stonefruit that was certified by Protected Harvest, a nonprofit group committed to sustainable agricultural practices.

DPR says that the exterminators who work with SunWest have utilized pheromone disruption to keep pests away from the stonefruit and have put in filters at the watershed of a nearby creek to filter runoff and keep pesticides and other pollutants from entering the creek.

In recognizing SunWest, the DPR noted that their leadership is helping to demonstrate that environmentally friendly exterminators are viable, can control pests, and are successful in protecting public health and the environment. DPR also recognized the city of Palo Alto, Gallo’s Sonoma Vineyards, and Marin County for their environmental efforts.

Eco-friendly exterminators are not just helping big agri-businesses, however. Many environmentally conscious exterminators offer services to homes and businesses. The same IPM techniques that were utilized by the exterminators at SunWest can be applied to commercial and residential buildings in Toronto. Utilizing IPM procedures, exterminators can determine when to use mechanical, physical, chemical, cultural, or biological means of controlling pests. IPM also enables exterminators to combine methods in a holistic approach that effectively controls pests with as little disruption to the environment as possible.

If you are in need of pest control but have hesitated because you were concerned about the effects of excessive chemicals used by exterminators, consider contacting Toronto area exterminators that are eco-friendly or that employ integrated pest management practices. You can control pests at your home and business and care about the environment all at the same time.
