Texas and Energy Independence
The Consumer Energy Alliance is a non-profit organization that promotes lower energy costs for consumers through responsible energy policy.
All of us suffer as energy prices rise. The cost of energy is built into the cost of everything we buy that is not created locally. We pay for higher transportation costs, and higher raw materials costs. And we all have to pay extra at the pump with every fill-up. Higher energy costs are an invisible drag on our struggling economy.
The Consumer Energy Alliance promotes all the different forms of energy production in Texas, which is part of the Consumer Energy Alliance’s South region. Most recently, the CEA has supported the Texas Keystone Pipeline project. The Keystone XL project would extend an existing pipeline from Canada down to refineries along Texas’ Gulf Coast. It would transport about 75% Canadian oil, and 25% American oil.
The Keystone Pipeline would help make the U.S. More secure, and would also help to decrease gas prices, according to industry experts.
Although the Consumer Energy Alliance promotes all different forms of American-produced energy, the fact is that our economy depends on oil and will be for some time. And Texas is an important part of that equation. About twenty-five percent of the nation’s oil is produced in the Gulf of Mexico, and Texas is still the #1 oil producing state in the nation.
In recent years, shale has been identified as one of the most promising new sources of fuel in America. One of the most exciting developments in the American energy industry is the technical advances that has occurred in the oil shale industry.
The Eagle Ford shale development in Texas helps demonstrate the potential of the project. Now in its infancy, this pipeline already supports more than 12,000 full-time jobs and generates about $60 million in revenues for the.
Texas is also a big source of biodiesel. In fact, Texas has the capacity to produce 460 million gallons of biodiesel fuel per year, by far the largest capacity of CEA-South’s five states (Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana).
And finally, Texas is also the nation’s #1 producer of wind energy.
The State of Texas is a vital part of the American energy market. As the law of supply and demand states, the higher the supply, the lower the costs. It makes sense for America to promote the responsible use of all the different energy sources that Texas has to offer.
