Teen Depression: A Reading

Depression is a state of mind which afflicts not only health of an individual but also seeds aversion to activity. There are numerous reasons why a child may get depressed; childrens’ psychic development is very complex, especially their growing and developing years. The problem of teen depression did not prevail until it was discovered in the 1980s. Psychiatrists didn’t think about teens getting depressed because of any reason.

It’s a state where a person feels helpless, restless, irritable, demotivated, will overeat or a complete loss of appetite, wavering concentration, digestion problems, feeling fatigue, having aches or loss of energy. These are a few symptoms which have been seen in patients after many years of diagnosis and research. This is a state of mind where any human being will look like any other normal person, but the bouts can shoot up at any point of time. Time is really a critical factor in most cases. There are numerous factors which can lead to depression in teens. Some of them are going to be discussed hereafter. Abusing and bullying are two of the most common factors that lead to anxiety and result in depression among the victims.

They make the victims feel worthless and guilty, which in turn severely takes a toll on their health. Both actions (abusing and bullying) settle a permanent fear in children’s minds and hearts about any subsequent torture and this maybe inflicted on them anytime. Conflicts at home are also a factor which ostracizes children from opening up with family members because they are left with no place to go and share their feelings after a stressful day at school. A family history of depression increases the risk of falling prey to it. Insomnia and isolation are also factors which count. When children isolate themselves, it shows their anger in some cases while in others it represents lack of positive attitude in them. There are cases when low self- esteem also plays a major role in pulling children into depression. At times, there are cases when children suffer from behavioral disorders leading to depression.

One of the most important factors leading to such an acute illness is stressful events: there are times when children are affected psychologically after seeing any particular incident. Alcohol and drugs are the most permanent factors which result in psychological destruction of them. Such damages are critical since the only treatment that can be given is through psychiatric help. The treatment for all such cases is a must lest the results maybe horrible. Dopamine, Norepinephrine and Serotonin are some of the anti-depressant drugs which have been given to patients earlier.

(it is advised to all parents who take these medicines to please ask a psychiatrist first before proceeding to buy them). Psychotherapy is another process which involves conversing with teens who are suffering in order to make feel at ease and cope up with the pressures which they aren’t able to handle. Electroconvulsive Treatment (ECT) is also another way of treatment which is safe and painless as it’s a shock therapy. The sole purpose of this treatment is to activate neurotransmitters and stimulate brain activity. Lastly, no treatment shall yield any positive results unless parents stick around with their kid who is suffering in order to give a better and safe future.
